MOSQUITO CONTROL
Fight The Bite

Everyone is aware of how annoying mosquitoes can be, especially when we are trying to enjoy our outdoor living areas or entertain guests. Eradication of mosquitoes in our outdoor living spaces is not practical. A more reasonable goal would be to control mosquitos and manage mosquito populations through reduction to below nuisance levels.

Owen Tree Service's Mosquito Pest Control Program can significantly reduce mosquito activity in your yard by creating a mosquito barrier.  You can choose either a season long Mosquito Control Program or a one-time Special Event Mosquito Control application. We offer: mosquito control for homes, mosquito control for businesses, mosquito control for commercial properties, mosquito control for municipalities, and mosquito control for property management.

Several species of mosquito are found in Michigan and the various species can reach peak population levels at different times of the season. Certain species are known to transmit diseases to humans and animals. An adult female mosquito usually must take a blood meal before laying eggs. Our mosquito control program begins when mosquito activity starts and continues throughout the summer months.

Most mosquito species rest during the day in shady, moist areas or on the underside of foliage. Mosquitoes can fly several miles from their breeding grounds to your yard. If they are able to find a blood meal in your yard they will find a suitable resting area in, or near your yard, to spend the day. Our knowledge of mosquito feeding habits is how we can help reduce the mosquito population in your yard.

Mosquito Barrier Treatments are applied to the trees, shrubs, and lawn in and around your yard. If possible, the soil under the deck is treated as well. As mosquitoes move in and out of your yard they will come into contact with treated areas. The result is a reduced mosquito population in your yard.

Our mosquito control program provides up to five treatments during the season. The first treatment usually begins around late May/early June and subsequent treatments are done at 4 - 6 week intervals. We can also provide mosquito control for a graduation party, mosquito control for an outdoor wedding reception, or mosquito control for an outdoor event.

Mosquito-borne disease infections in Michigan are rare, but they do occur. Mosquitoes are known to transmit West Nile encephalitis, Eastern Equine encephalitis, yellow fever, and malaria to humans as well as transmitting heartworms to dogs. Reducing the mosquito population in your yard not only limits the activity of these nuisance pests, but also reduces the spread of mosquito-borne diseases.

WHAT YOU CAN DO TO REDUCE MOSQUITOES IN YOUR YARD

There are many ways to reduce or prevent mosquitoes from breeding in your yard. Mosquitoes require water to breed. Eliminating water sources can prevent thousands of mosquitoes from breeding in your yard.

  1. Dump out standing water from containers in the yard, including recycling bins, tires, boats, wheelbarrows, and tarps. If possible, drill holes in the bottom of garbage can or recycling containers stored outdoors.
  2. Keep gutters clean and unclogged. Downspouts should drain properly and not leave puddles in the drainage area.
  3. Keep swimming pools cleaned and chlorinated, even when not in use. Empty children's pools and turn them over when not in use. Prop up pool covers so water does not collect on top of them.
  4. Stock ornamental ponds with goldfish. Ornamental ponds that are aerated will keep water moving and discourage mosquitoes from laying eggs.
  5. Dump anything that holds water twice per week if it has rained: birdbaths, non-chlorinated wading pools, garbage can lids, saucers under flower pots.
  6. Don't leave water in pet bowls for more than two days.
  7. Keep your property clean of items that can hold water: aluminum cans, bottles, tires, bottle lids or caps.
