Benefits of Shredded Hardwood Mulch
There are many benefits to mulching landscape beds, shrubs and trees. Perhaps most beneficial, from a tree’s
perspective, is the use of organic mulch that enriches the soil as it breaks down.
Landscape soils are very different from woodland soils where
trees are made to grow. Landscapes of newer homes are growing on compacted, infertile subsoil uncovered during construction.
Most landscapes include large lawn areas and over time grasses change the soil by raising the pH and encouraging colonization
by grass-friendly microorganisms.
This is all very well and good for grass plants. Woody plants, however, need a lower soil pH and tree-friendly
microbes. Enter shredded hardwood mulch.
Shredded hardwood mulch is like the woodland floor, but more attractive. As
the mulch breaks down soil pH is lowered and the nutrients and microorganisms trees depend upon to live are released. Shredded
bark and wood chips from exotic trees (such as red cedar) do not supply all that our native and landscape trees and shrubs
require. Why import? Native is better!
Give your trees what they need – incorporate a bit of the forest floor into your landscape soil.
