TREE PRUNING
Arboriculture and the pruning of trees is often considered an art and a science. The science of tree trimming is the knowledge of the correct arboricultural practices to properly trim a tree. The art is the end result of having a tree that enhances your property and offers a positive contribution to your landscape. Tree trimming is one of the most important tree care services that tree owners can do to maintain the health of their trees. Proper tree trimming cuts need to be employed each time an arborist prunes off a tree branch. Tree health can be improved or reduced depending on which tree branches the arborist cuts.
Our tree pruning arborists know that not all trees are trimmed with the same considerations in mind. Although the tree branch removal may be done the same way on every tree, a mature Oak tree is not going to be treated the same as an ornamental Dogwood tree. Ornamental trees such as Dogwoods or Crabapples are smaller than mature Oak trees or Maple trees, so there is a higher level of detail involved when trimming ornamental landscape trees.
An arborist is also going to take into consideration the age of the tree. A young tree is going to be trimmed differently than a mature tree. Trimming of a young tree involves setting up the tree structure for strong future growth. Crossing branches are removed as well as branches that are spaced too close together. In contrast, trimming mature trees often involves just removing dead or dying branches. Trimming mature trees requires the tree pruning arborist not only to be a tree trimming expert, but to also be knowledgeable in the operation of a wide variety of specialized tree care equipment. Some trees can be accessed with the use of a bucket truck – often referred to as a cherry picker. A tree trimmer must also be able to climb large, mature trees in situations where a bucket truck cannot be used. This involves the use of climbing saddles, climbing ropes, and the knowledge of how to tie several tree climbing knots. Using a chainsaw on the ground can intimidate some people. However, working aloft, in a climbing saddle, suspended by a rope, and cutting tree branches with a chainsaw is too daunting for most people.
Many Michigan tree services employ ISA Certified Arborists. The ISA Certified Arborist may be the foreman on the crew, the representative from the tree service that inspected your trees, a manager employed by the tree company, or the owner of the tree care service. Certification is attained through the International Society of Arboriculture (ISA). To become an ISA Certified Arborist a tree worker must have experience working for a tree care service or a college degree and pass a comprehensive written examination with a score of 72 % or higher. ISA Certification is granted for three years and must be maintained by attending continuing education seminars on tree care or by retaking the ISA Certified Arborist test. ISA Certified Arborists know how to trim trees and can provide a higher level of care than would be received from an untrained tree cutter. Owen Tree Service is happy to be able to offer you the knowledge and experience of several ISA Certified Arborists to help you keep your trees and shrubs as healthy as possible.
Many communities in Macomb and Oakland County in Michigan have a tree ordinance that forbids the removal of certain trees without a permit. Tree trimming, however, can usually be done without a permit, providing the intent of the trimming will not endanger the health of the tree – such as tree topping.
The benefits of proper tree trimming include:
• Removal of dead, dying, rubbing or hazardous tree branches.
• Reduced potential for storm damage trees and tree disease by increasing the flow of air through the canopy of the tree.
• Preventing entrance points for insects or disease.
• Clearing branches from buildings, roofs, signs, driveways, or roadways.
• Increasing the health of the tree by removing dead or dying tree branches.
• Create visual access to lakes, rivers, etc. by vista pruning.
• Establish, improve, or restore the branch and tree structure.
• Improving the beauty and longevity of the tree in your landscape.
